]]>We have two leading suppliers of cider: Darley Abbey Cider and Hurst Cider.
Darley Abbey Cider doesn't own a single apple tree. Instead, all the apples used to make their cider are donated to them from gardens, allotments, and orchards across Derbyshire. Is that cool or what?
Of course, the places that donate apples to Darley Abbey are given cider in return.
With all their donations, they have 40 varieties of apples, helping them create their unique flavours.
There are three types of cider for you to choose from; Dry Cider, Fruit Cider and Sweet Cider, or you can have a mixed case of all three.
Take a look here for your next refreshing beverage from Darley Abbey Cider.
Hurst Cider are small craft cidermakers, starting from their home-based cider shed in 2011. Their apples are locally sourced Staffordshire apples and traditional dabbinett bittersweet cider apples. The freshly pressed apple juice is then blended and left to ferment naturally with its wild yeasts.
The flavour of the cider may change from batch to batch due to the unsulphited wild yeasts, as they are just as unpredictable as mother nature.
Golden Pip and Jibber Jabber are two popular ciders from Hurst Cider. Golden Pip is traditionally made using fresh-pressed apple juice used to create a refreshing craft cider. Jibber Jabber is a delicious hand-crafted cider that is full of character and flavour.
Hurst Cider also do a pear cider; Puckered Pear - great taste, refreshing and goes down a treat!
You can view all Hurst Cider here.
]]>Order.Beer offers a wide range of exciting beers from some of the UK's most talked-about microbreweries and can deliver them straight to your door. If you're looking for a distinctive craft beer to tickle those taste buds with, why not take a look at what we have to offer.
]]>So, we're here to help you fearlessly conquer the next time you find yourself ordering your next beer beverage.
There are two main types of beer: lager and ale. They're like the umbrella for everything else that comes under them. Ales are typically more flavourful, whereas lagers tend to be crisper.
Pilsners are pale lagers noted for their crispness, brewed originally in Pilsen, Czech Republic, in the mid-1800s.
Porters and stouts are both dark ales. Stouts came along when brewers started to experiment with recipes for porters. The difference between them are Porters are made with malted barley, and stouts are brewed with unmalted, roasted barley. Porters are lighter with malty sweetness and just a touch of hop (bitterness). Stouts are more full-bodied with an underlying tinge of coffee.
Much like 'local' or 'organic', 'craft' denotes a smaller production to your usual corporate giants like Miller, Budweiser and Heineken. We work with a growing range of independent breweries around the UK. All of which have their own specialities and flavours. But above all pride themselves on their quality craftsmanship to produce some of the best craft beers around.
If you're unsure what type of beer you might like, why not check out our 12 mixed beers selection? You're bound to find one that tickles your tastebuds, not to mention it would be a big hit at your next friend/family gathering.
When you talk about life’s great partnerships the mind wanders perhaps to such greats as Morecambe and Wise, French and Saunders, Ant and Dec or maybe food matches such as Fish and Chips or Sausage and Mash to name but a few, the list of course is endless.
In relation to football and particularly the Euros, one might think of Shearer and Sheringham the duo of 96 that seem to be the topic of many conversations of the commentators. The fact is for the fans and spectators there is no greater partnership than that of beer and football and here are just a few reasons why they have forged in this way:
Creating the build-up and a sense of occasion for the main event
Set the scene, before any big game occasion and especially football the build up is as important to get you in the mood for the action that awaits. When watching live football this would involve a trip to the pub before kick-off to meet with like-minded friends and down a pint of two in preparation or perhaps home alone or with a gathering of friends to keep you company but wherever you may be the ceremonial ritual of the first sip of your pint, flicking off the beer top or opening a can signifies the start of the main event.
Memory triggers and a channel of emotions
It is a fact that taste and aroma is one of the best-known things to conjure up memory triggers and it would be true to say for most that beer smells and tastes of good times. The channel of emotions from clasping the glass, bottle or can during stressful or eventful parts of the game to celebrating a goal with a chink I the air and a good gulp of beer.
Effects of alcohol
One of the most apparent enhancements that beer can have on watching football is purely down to the alcohol. Of course, a few bottles, cans or pints stretched out over a couple of hours is never going to have a great effect, but alcohol is known for heightening senses and give any adrenalin present that extra impetus to flow – so as the football match progresses the beer and football work in partnership with each other making tackles and attacks forward more exciting and the reverberation of the crowd was like a cry or shout out to drink more beer. At the same time it is also important to remind people to be drink aware and drink responsibly.
When beer and football are both good to watch they become the perfect partnership.

National Gin Day – So much more than just a G&T
Many people enjoy a great Gin and Tonic, some like to keep it simple with just ice and a slice, but others like to adventure further but, there is so much more to know about this historic spirit.
NATIONAL GIN DAY FACT: The word ‘Gin’ is the English translation of the Dutch word ‘Jenever’
Traditionally made in Europe and defined by the use of the juniper berry which provides botanical flavour. Juniper is supported by other botanical characters such as coriander or cassia, the more contemporary gins are distilled using mixes of leaves, flowers and spice to give some complexity to the gin.
A little bit of history and its connections to India.
Juniper flavoured spirits date back hundreds of years, the Dutch established recreational consumption of juniper flavoured drinks with the addition of exotic spices. The English then took a strong liking to the spirit and started to produce a less malty and cleaner spirit which became Gin.
During the colonisation of India by the British, hordes of people were affected by Malaria. They swiftly found a cure by using an infusion of the Chinchona Bark – which incidentally evolved into our well-known tonic water. In its bare state is tasted horrible so there was a need to make it more drinkable and the most popular beverage at the time was Gin. So they pulled together a cocktail of bark infused into a mix of gin and lime juice and thus – the legendary Gin and Tonic was born.
From this time on Gin went from strength to strength crossing the Atlantic into American markets and soon the Gin cocktail was introduced.
Give one of the Top 5 Gin a try on National Gin Day
Or mix yourself up one of the Top 5 Gin Cocktails
If you need a recipe - just email us at marketing@order.beer and we'll send it right over
NATIONAL GIN DAY FACT – At one point Gin became known as the bane of British society. Gin joints became some of the first places where women drank alongside men. This led to the belief they were neglecting their children and turning to a life of debauchery – hence Gin’s nickname of ‘Mother’s Ruin’
From Mother’s Ruin to a Modern Tipple
Gin has seen a real surge over the past few years with Gin parties, gin menus, ginvent calendars, gin tasting tours and even a gin hotel – the UK’s renewed passion for all things gin is fast creating a whole new industry boom. Demand for interesting gins, made by small scale craft and artisan producers has escalated
NATIONAL GIN DAY FACT - The total number of distilleries registered in the UK now stands at 563. England's distillery numbers have topped 300 for the first time, with 311 registered in the region as of 2020. The number of distilleries in England has almost tripled since 2016.(Feb2021)

Why does Tatama Colombian coffee taste so good?
Colombian coffee is famous worldwide for both its quality and delicious taste; in fact, along with a couple of other countries, Colombia’s coffee is renowned as some of the best in the world. But what, you may ask makes one country’s coffee better than another’s?
Isn’t it all just coffee?
The quick and simple answer is no, and we’ve collated some information to help explain:
In reference to raw coffee, there are three primary factors which determine its quality We delve in with some explanation in the paragraphs below to help determine why each one makes such a key difference when it comes to making this coffee taste so good
Factor One – Climate and Geography
Colombia mountainous terrain and tropical location has just about the perfect geography for growing coffee, a sensitive crop which needs exactly the right conditions to thrive. The richness of flavour for Colombian coffee is distinguished is mainly down to climate, perfect soil and the exact right amount of rainfall.
FACT: Coffee thrives in places with at least 200 centimetres (80 inches) of rainfall per year, as well as in locations where the temperature never falls below freezing
Factor Two - The Growing and Harvesting Process
These factors cannot be underestimated when growing and producing coffee. It’s not enough to have the perfect climate and terrain if your methods of growing and collecting coffee beans are poor or badly executed. The best coffee is grown on steep slopes, surrounded by trees and banana plants, which provide much-needed shade and prevent the beans being scorched by the blistering heat of the sun. Not only this every bean is picked by hand.
FACT: Yes, you most definitely read that last sentence right: each one of the nearly 600,000 coffee producers in Colombia picks every bit of their harvest by hand.
A machine cannot tell the difference between green beans, unripe beans, overripe beans and the ideal coffee cherry. But a human being ‘hand picking and assessing’ can, and the hard work and blistered fingers of tens of thousands of pickers is testament to the hard nature of their work
Factor Three – Coffee Bean Types
There are two different types of coffee bean: arabica and robusta. Colombia, with its perfect terrain and climate, is one of the only countries that produce 100% arabica beans.
FACT: Arabica is widely considered to be the superior bean, and it has a sweeter and lighter taste, as well as less caffeine (approximately half the amount) plus stronger acidic notes.
TATAMA COFFEE STORY – HENRY GOMEZ
The Tatama project started with my desire to support the coffee producing community from my birth town Santuario, Risaralda in Colombia.
I am a third-generation coffee producer and I feel proud of still having the small farm where my 3 brothers and I were born, we are still producing coffee and endeavouring to improve processes and quality. Producing speciality coffee helps to make the farm sustainable, as cultivating coffee for the commercial market farmers only just covers cost of production.
I bring quality coffee from my region to your cup, aiming to benefit the farmers by buying directly and paying a premium for their carefully produced, picked and processed coffee. Guaranteeing a more than Fair Trade price makes coffee production sustainable and profitable.

What is Cider made of?
Cider is a fermented alcoholic beverage made from the unfiltered juice of apples. Cider alcohol content varies, generally, between 3% and 8.5%, but some continental cider goes to 12% alcohol. In UK law, it must contain at least 35% apple juice (fresh or from concentrate).
FACT: 56% of the apples grown in the UK are used to make Cider
Is Cider good for you?
Apple cider contains polyphenols, which are compounds in plants that act as antioxidants. They can help the body to fight against free radicals and cell damage, lowering your risk of certain types of cancer, diabetes, and heart disease. Polyphenols also help to ease inflammation in the body
FACT: Cider apples ate high in dietary fibre, vitamin C, carotenoids. Carotenoids are known to protect against disease and illness
Who invented Cider?
There is evidence that Celts in Britain made cider from crab apples as long ago as 3000 BCE, but the Roman invasion introduced apple cultivars and orcharding techniques to England
FACT: In the 14th century babies were baptised in Cider until the church banned the practice.
How do you drink Cider?
Most craft cider producers advise you not to drink ice cold cider. The sweet spot for enjoying craft cider is 50 to 55 degrees, though with the dry, tannic ciders, we even like them closer to room temperature.
FACT: Farmworkers wages were historically paid by 4 pints of Cider a day.
Is Cider always made with Apples?
Only fermented apples and pears may be labelled cider, according to the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau. If a bottle does not contain apple or pear cider, and is more than 7 percent alcohol, it must instead be labeled “fruit wine.” That's one reason so many flavors are being added to basic apple cider.
FACT: There are approximately 350 varieties of cider apples in the UK
Why is Cider popular in the UK?
The Little Ice Age and Wine Wars - This drop in temperature killed off grapes throughout the UK as the climate became too hostile for the heat-loving vines. Apples, however, were able to survive these cooler temperatures, and so cider became even more firmly cemented as the leading beverage in the UK
The Lowdown on Darley Abbey Cider
Darley Abbey is one of our key cider suppliers. Based in Derbyshire. The Cider is made wholly by using donated apples, Darley Abbey don’t own a single tree. A proportion is paid back to the contributors.
The cider is available in 3 types in 12 bottle boxes and also a mixed selection which includes a mixture of bottles subject to availability.
Dry Cider, Fruit Cider, Sweet Cider or a mixed case of them all. Great cider from an independent producer, what more can you ask for, well here's a few more words:
“Darley Abbey Cider from Derbyshire is made using a single year's harvest of over 30 varieties of locally grown apples. All apples are hand-picked and pressed during the autumn then left to mature into a deliciously crisp, clear and refreshing cider."
Dry Cider 5%, 330ml - lightly carbonated dry apple bottled cider
Sweet Cider 5%, 330ml - lightly carbonated sweet apple bottled cider
Fruit Cider 5%, 330ml - lightly carbonated fruit bottled cider. Fruit cider is infused with summer fruits giving a subtle sweet and tangy flavour.
]]>Craft Beer is individually brewed batches of beer, all made with the finest of ingredients, care, skill and knowledge of the process. Experimenting with different styles allows craft brewers to be versatile in style, free-thinking and innovative.
The craft brewing scene has become extremely innovative over the past few years, there is something for everyone’s taste. New exciting breweries are opening weekly, making all breweries pay attention and continue to strive to improve the quality of what they are doing
In the UK, craft beer is seen as being at the forefront of creativity, constantly evolving, experimenting. There’s no ‘rule book’ as such for craft beer, though there are some product and design cues that denote craft beer to consumers:
Where did craft beer originate from?
While the UK and Europe have witnessed small, independent breweries grow over the past decade, you can link the roots of the craft beer movement back to 1970s America. It was a decade of radical change. Against a backdrop of women's rights, gay rights and environmental movements, the Watergate scandal and the Vietnam War, small breweries on the West Coast were fermenting a rebellion of their own against staid, traditional beer from Europe. The 70s saw the birth of the microbrewery in the US, rethinking European beer recipes with innovative flavours and techniques to create bold, punchy brews. The era pushed in a renaissance in brewing innovation and experimentation, which quickly spread back across the Atlantic to Europe.
It’s not as straight forward as you may think in the UK, but there are some craft beer traits that set it apart from run-of-the-mill mass-produced beers, which include:
Small scale breweries – craft breweries in the UK generally produce fewer than 5m litres of beer – equivalent to 30,000 barrels – and don't have access to the same scale of production and distribution of large brewers.
Independent – craft brewers are fiercely independent. Often started by a couple of mates with a passion for brewing, small craft breweries are usually at least 75% independently owned.
Authentic – craft brewing uses traditional, time-honoured brewing methods. It avoids some of the murky practices of modern, mass-produced beer, including using additives such as corn or rice.
Community Led – Craft breweries tend to spring up in all sorts of different places but have their roots firmly planted in the local community bringing people together socially
Provenance – Craft beer is about transparency. A refreshing change from mass-produced beer assembly lines in automated factories, craft brewers are open about the techniques they use and enjoy detailing the hops added to enhance flavour and the taste notes you can expect.
Innovation and Creativity – With an emphasis on taste and new takes on old recipes, flavour notes are vast. The craft doesn't end with what's inside the beer can or bottle. Artistic designs transform tins of beer into art forms, adding genuine character and energy to each brew poured.

Facts you perhaps didn’t know about wine
Well did you know? Beer is believed to be older than wine, but the most expensive bottle of wine ever sold brought in much more than the priciest brew.
We’ve collated together a number of interesting facts are detailed in the bullet points below, are you aware of them all and were any surprising to read?
This is just a small cross selection of facts we’ve collated about Wine. Some you will know and some that you don’t. They do say you learn something new every day.

We offer an exciting range of traditional wines from all over the world including English fruit wines and a rather special sparkling Rhubling wine that would brighten up an occasion.
Looking for an English wine from an independent producer, well you are in the right place. Order wine online, delivered to your door.
Wines are made from real fruit and are not mixed with a grape wine. They contain no sulphites, artificial colours or preservatives and only use British sugar.
The fruit used in the wine is locally sourced where possible and the Elderflowers are picked by the producers themselves from around Burntwood and Lichfield. The wines are medium/medium sweet, the gooseberry being our only dry wine.
Red and White Wine Mixed Selection
Whilst we do also have a range of English independent wines, both fruit and grape types available, we have had several requests for more traditional red and white wines and we have teamed up with a wine specialist who has curated us an exclusive and affordable selection for your consumption.

4 ways to cook up a culinary storm with beer
The benefits of beer extend far wider that opening up a cold one after a long hard day. Why not move a step further and combine the drink into your cooking routine and try some of the following ideas – a versatile ingredient to refresh the palette and the body.
Beer Batter – Fish, Onion Rings or Calamari
Many gastropubs have been using this method for years. The beer works like sparkling water to carbonate the mix and provide a light, airy and crisp batter
The alcohol contained in beer also plays a key role in moderating the internal temperature and crisping the crust. Alcohol evaporates faster than water, so a beer batter doesn't have to cook as long as one made only with water or milk.
Beer Can Chicken
Basically, this is where you stand the chicken up around a can of beer. The method of opening the upright beer can allows the contents of the can to evaporate and keep the meat moist during cooking.
Marinades and Braising
One of the most effective ways to cook with beer is to use it as a tenderising marinade. Beer contains enzymes that help break down tough fibres in meat, making it more tender and flavourful at the same time.
“Braising” is a French cooking term that defines a technique used in many cuisines to make tough cuts of meat very tender and full flavoured. ... The chosen beers enhance the dish by bringing their own flavour profiles to the recipe, creating a wonderful sauce to be served over the final plate
Bread
You can use any beer in beer bread so it’s great for experimenting. Each beer will change the flavour of the bread. Brown ale, lagers, and porters are all good.
Simple Beer Bread Recipe - All you need is 375g of flour, 3 teaspoons of sugar, and a 330ml bottle of fragrant beer. No yeast, no warm water, no kneading, no proving. The yeast and the air bubbles are in the beer already – you just mix it, bake it for 45 minutes, then eat it.
Why cook with beer?
Beer adds a rich, earthy flavour to soups and stews that makes them taste like they've been simmering for hours. Beers with a sweet or nutty taste can add depth to desserts. And don't worry about getting drunk – virtually all of the alcohol evaporates during the cooking process.
Beer actually has more taste profiles than wine, because there are so many variations in the four ingredients. And that means if you can cook something with wine, you can be pretty sure that it will work with a beer too, whether it’s a creamy risotto or a steak sauce.
Is cooking with beer healthy?
It might be surprising to know but cooking with beer can actually be a healthy way to flavour food. A regular sized bottle beer has about 150 calories and is free of fat and cholesterol. Beer also has a variety of vitamins and minerals like vitamin B-vitamins, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium and selenium.
Does it matter what beer you cook with?
There are some always-safe options when choosing your beer. Relatively lighter ales (pale ale, amber, or light brown ale) will complement nearly all beer-recipes and so are a great default choice. That said, it's also safe to stay away from IPAs (India Pale Ales) in your cooking
Cooking with beer is all about experimenting so why not order yourself a variety of craft beers from our different selections and get to work and cook up a culinary beer storm in the kitchen

Christmas spirit is how the individual acts who loves Christmas and expresses this by being kind to others. Many ingredients go into making the Spirit of Christmas such as giving, hope, love, understanding and general goodwill to humankind. These emotions of Christmas stand alongside the things we do that during this festive time like the giving of presents, excited children, decorating the home, gatherings and of course the food and drink consumed along the way.
Do you feel in the Christmas Spirit?

Rest and relaxation with friends and loved ones is key but obviously this Christmas in the throes of COVID-19 lockdowns the experience is going to be very different from the norm.
So we thought we’d help and mark down a couple of ideas to help you enter into the Christmas Spirit and let in the sights, sounds and tastes of Christmas:

We want you to be able to sit back, try and relax as we’ve teamed up our 12-beer selection with a quick review of the Order.Beer all-time top 12 horror films for you. Order.Beer – 12 Beer Selections
Order.Beer Horror Film and Beer Selections
Number One – The Shining – 1980
Famously remembered for the quote by Jack Nicholson “Heres’ Jonny” and the fact that you may never want to take the keys to hotel room 237.
Plot – The Shining follows a man and his family as he takes on the role of Winter caretaker at a resort hotel known as The Overlook. It turns out that the hotel doesn’t really like people. It has made it to number one on the list as it feels evil for so many reasons. The way the film is delivered by Kubrick leaves it with you long after the credits have passed by.
Beer Selection Suggestion – Beartown Brewery – Peach Melbear (4.4%, 330ml bottle)
A juicy South Carolina style peach and elderflower pale beer
Number Two – The Texas Chainsaw Massacre – 1974
Tobe Hooper’s harrowing film title needs no explanation – it unfortunately does exactly what is says on the tin.
Plot – The film follows five young people who leave the safety of the world behind and journey into deep America, they of course need fuel along the way and what is presented to them in one house is death and depravity that lingers in the mind of individuals even decades on after the film released.
Beer Selection Suggestion – Beartown Brewery – Wojtek (5.5%, 330ml bottle)
Deep golden dry finish of citrus fruit and juniper berry
Number Three – The Thing – 1982
Don’t be misled that the title doesn’t really add anything to the film, leading you to think of something not too specific that someone would describe as a thing.
Plot – Based around life at an Antarctic research station and starring the talented Kurt Russell, the researchers take on ‘the thing’ alien type scaremonger that affects the blood. Not one for animal lovers as it starts with the dogs and doesn’t know when to stop.
Beer Selection Suggestion – Dynamite Brewery – Gold Rush, crisp golden ale (4%, 500ml bottle) A flagship ale for this Southern brewery – this classic and refreshing beer is very session-able and has a smooth finish.

A modern-day film that delves into the what is just lurking beneath the surface on what seems like the perfect family life – always the basis for a great horror story.

Beer Selection Suggestion – Black Charge – Oatmeal Stout (4%, 500ml bottle) A smooth, creamy mouthfeel, with a sweet finish and a well-balanced body

Mankind was quick to learn that drinking an alcoholic beverage made them relax, feel good and increased the good mood vibe so it’s no surprise that when there is a call for creating a feel-good situation or celebration moment that people add alcohol to the equation.
Why is beer as associated with celebrations?
Beer is probably one of the oldest drinks known to the human race. It is the third most popular beverage in the world after water and tea. Historically, beer was a communal beverage, illustrations from ancient Middle East shows individuals gathered round a jug or vat of beer using what looks like straws to drink together from the same pot. This is where the public house gathering at the bar has evolved over time. In the same manner the tradition of touching or chinking glasses together with a ‘cheers’ in a toast to whatever situation is an extended symbolic representation of togetherness.
Beer was served a weddings, religious ceremonies and festivals across the land and was actually considered a staple of the daily diet as it provided both nourishment and a safe method of hydration. It has been known for it to be used a wages or down payment for the workforce. It had added value beyond just a drink to the ancients it stood for prosperity, success, health and spirituality. The use of beer and indeed all alcoholic drinks today in celebrations is a centuries old tradition.

Until quite recently in history beer was considered a food source. The brewing process would eliminate bacteria and alcohol content, making it a safe source to consume. It was referred to as ‘liquid-bread’ since before industrialization of brewing beer it had a good source of B vitamins and fibre. So again, it’s not a surprise that beer/alcohol became an important part of celebrations.
Why do we take a bottle or give the gift the gift of alcohol?
For centuries the tradition of drinking champagne to mark a celebration originated in the royal court of Europe prior to 1789. Champagne was viewed as a status symbol due to its expensive nature. Just the sound of a popping cork on the champagne bottle is enough to mark a celebration. Alcohol gifts are given at birthdays especially milestone events, weddings, engagements, passing of exams and degrees and of course Christmas and New Year Celebrations.
Nowadays, the popular Prosecco is giving the traditional champagne a run for its money, particularly being a cheaper option.
Have you tried the Rhubling sparkling wine offer from Order.Beer – a refreshing alternative of fizz? https://order.beer/collections/order-wine-online-delivered-to-your-door/products/rhubling-sparkling-wine

Well, here at Order.Beer we have the answer to this, it’s because when we consume salty food the receptors on our tongues that detect bitterness are reduced. So, in fact salt neutralises the bitter taste and the resulting factor is that the beer can taste smoother and you can pick up other characteristics in a beers taste sensation profile.
In times gone by the only choices you had for a beer snack especially in a public house environment were peanuts, crisps and the odd jar filled with eggs in pickle that you almost dare not to ask for let alone eat one along an accompaniment to a beer.
Well, it pleases us to now say times have changed and modern beer snacks have evolved, and you can now have a plethora of snacks both at home and in the pub. Could there be some that you haven’t thought about or indeed forgotten about that this article might even tempt you into trying again.
The Scotch Egg
These are now available in all shapes and sizes, from bitesize nibbles to large covered eggs off the shelf. Your best way by far is opting for the artisan made direct from the deli made from a number of different sausage meat varieties or indeed you could make your own for that weekend or even mid-week treat. We’ll follow up with a number of recipes for you to try in another article soon.
Flavoured Nuts, Seeds, Crisps, Popcorn and Fries
From salted to chilli nuts, sesame seed thins to bacon and scampi fries. The options in the small snack pack variety are now endless. There is something to suit every palette and beverage and they are a definite favourite as a beer accompaniment.
Whilst eating crisps, nuts, popcorn, fries or anything salty, there’s one beer that will never let you down. Savoury snacks are a good pairing with perhaps a lager or pilsner as they help to cleanse the palate and offer a crisp, refreshing ease from salt.
Nuts and beer are also considered a particularly healthy pairing, if consumed in moderate amounts of course. According to Men's Health, nuts help to reduce the bad cholesterol levels while increasing healthy cholesterol, while alcohol helps reduce blood clots by functioning as a blood thinner.
The Pork Scratching
The scratching believed to have originated in the 1800s in the West Midlands of England and started their life as the food of the working classes, where families kept their own pigs at home and feeding them up for the slaughter. When people couldn’t afford to waste any part of the animal and either by design or trial and error the scratching was born. Nowadays, they come in all manner of shapes, sizes and levels of crunchiness and are a firm favourite beer accompaniment with over twenty million bags sold in the UK every year – now that is some scratching consumption.
The Peperami – it’s a bit of an animal they say..
Way back in the 80s, the green foil packs had a picture of a glass of beer on them with a Peperami stick either in the glass or in front of it marketing it as a great pairing with beer of any nature. Purchase off the shelf with plenty of brands to choose from to eat alongside your tipple of choice.
So, after all this talk of snacking, are you feeling a bit peckish and wondering now what snacks you be pairing with your chosen beer selection from Order.Beer?

Confused by the increased numbers of beers on the market and even more confused by the types of beer and terminology branded round the market. So, what do they mean, we’ve laid out a shortlist of beer types and elements of the beer-making processes to help:
WORTS
Not to be mistaken for a skin growth issue. A wort is how all beer begins. Wort is the liquid resulting from mashing of the malted barley at the beginning of the beer process. For beer making, hops and yeast are then added to the wort before fermentation commences. The yeast then transforms the sugar in the wort into alcohol and produces CO2 that makes the beer sparkling in appearance.
HOPS
Similar to a grapevine, hops are a climbing plant. In the beer-making process, the female ripened hop flower is used to add aroma and flavour. Popular in IPA (India Pale Ale) production. Hops are added at various stages of the process:
Start - Bittering hops are added
Middle - Flavouring hops are added
Boiling/Brewing Process – Dry hops added
End – Aroma hops are added
MALT
Malt is essentially a grain of barley that has been germinated to free enzymes that help to transform the starch from the maltose (sugar). The colour of beer will very much depend on how long the grain has been heated up for:
Pale colour – heated up to a high temperature for a short period
Copper colour – heated for longer at lower temperatures
The darker the malt the more burnt or caramelised flavours will be present in the beer.
BARLEY
The main cereal used in the beer production process. Malted barley is a common grain that starch is extracted from during the brewing process to extract the sugars necessary to be turned into alcohol. Wheat is also used to promote a foamy and more persistent head to the beer.
LAGER
By far the most commonly consumed type of beer. Unlike Ale, lager is usually brewed at cooler temperatures. Fermentation of lager takes longer producing more alcohol, gas and a cleaner more neutral taste and flavour.
ALE
Widely known as a malt style drink. Commonly brewed with barley malt and fermented at high temperatures. It can be difficult to produce this style consistently. Production of ale introduces beers with more body, complexity and different flavours. They come in a variety of colours and strengths.
We hope this sheds a little light into the world of beer terminology. There are plenty of beer selections to choose from within the www.order.beer website, perhaps you could do your own tasting session?
]]>If you haven't sampled English wine before then wine not give it a go? From traditional grape to a range of fruits, red, white, rose and sparkling too, if you like wine then you should be able to find one from these that's a great match too.
]]>
Of course this years circumstances haven't been ideal for anyone and a number of festivals, exhibitions and events would have been taking place to celebrate the fabulous English wine producers we have across the country. However fear not, a range of English wine is available for you to enjoy in your homes and with family and friends, where social distancing and respect for safety and others is maintained. Of course not forgetting, smiles, laughter and togetherness which is essential in all times. Whilst initially many of us have been raising a glass virtually, it's good to see us able to use our gardens and outdoor space to welcome us, even if distanced.
In regards to English wine, it was actually only at the end of March that we began to include a range of wines amongst some great beer and we're glad to say from the feedback we've received, they have gone down a treat and seeing repeat orders clearly shows they are enjoyed for the long term.
There have been two producers especially who we have been working with so far and we will discuss those now.
Clive's wines based in Staffordshire, produce a range of award winning fruit based wines which can be drank on their own or used to make a range of cocktails, long drinks and additional creations. Initially some people are reluctant to try non grape wines but until you have, you don't know what they taste like and they are enjoyable with or after food or in isolation, sorry isolation maybe not the best word for now but at least we're beginning to feel less isolated in general and it's great to be able to share wine with friends, when the rain holds off!
The mixed selections have been particularly popular with Elderflower lovers also loving the options there and Damson becoming a firm favourite for those more accustomed to traditional grape wine. If you haven't tried the wine before I would recommend the mixed selection and then pick your favourites! Have a look at the range.
Also don't forget the Rhubling which is a sparkling Rhubarb based wine, perfect for celebrating those special occasions.
There is an old variety of Rhubarb called 'Champagne' it is one of the earliest varieties and is recognised as being the best forced rhubarb variety.
Now we will leave you to decide this one but what a testimonial this is!
"Your Rhubling is gorgeous. A nice fizz and a lovely balanced flavour of dry and sweet, so much nicer than champagne in our opinion." Nicky Griffith
I'm not sure if I could read that and not try it, in fact we do have one cooling in the fridge at this very moment. So before my attention sways to the fridge I best add the link so you can look at it yourselves! Order Rhubling Sparkling wine.
If traditional grape wine is your preference then you may want to have a look at the Half Penny Green range, who do a red, white and a rose. The only thing I would say is that the names could possibly be a bit easier but they certainly make them intriguing! Penny Black is actually their White wine, so that's Half Penny Green Penny Black, maybe say that before you've had a couple of glasses! The red is actually called Penny Red and the rose is English Rose so they're a little easier to remember!
What's this doing here, I hear you say! Well we've taken our award winning gift tubes and added a little twist, as this variation includes 3 miniature wines, order your Mini Wines Gift Tube
After reading all this and you don't like wine, then no problem either as thankfully we've plenty beer too! However definitely give it a try and you can order wine and beer at the same time, so maybe you can please everyone...
]]>As a pre school that is very close to us through both family and friends, we are keen to do what we can to assist. Therefore we have added some additional incentives to help promote the fund and encourage support.
]]>As an extra incentive for your support, for every donation received up to and including Sunday 7th June 2020 we will conduct a random draw for a selection of gifts supplied through Order.Beer and our producers. These will include
Order.Beer case of 12 mixed beers
12 Bottles of Darley Abbey Cider
A bottle of Rhubling Sparkling Wine
Order.Beer Triangular Gift Tube

Anyway during this time, we took the opportunity to investigate some potential new breweries and their products which we may add to our selections in due course.
What became clear though was some of the creative design and mastery and particularly imagination had been put into the design of both cans and bottles. We discussed this together and the point of wouldn't it be great one day to get our children's artwork on some of our own products.
Two cans from Brewboard Brewery
It was becoming clearer, of course this is possible.
Returning home later on, whilst it would be expected they'd be crashing out to some paw patrol or wacky races (ok sorry that one was me). I'd made tea (ok another confession, I'd put a pizza in alongside some crisps) and got presented with a few pieces of paper with some of their own creations and wowza, fantastic. It hit me, yes we have a business selling beer online and we have to ensure all the logistical side is smoother and deal with the courier system but what opportunities have we got, loads!
You may or may not know but the artist we worked with for our triangular tubes also provides art lessons for children of all ages. I also did art at school, I wasn't necessarily good at it, in fact technically I failed it with a D but that wasn't the point. For me it was a break from the number crunching and bizarre how will this ever apply to life maths and other courses to give me a moment to break free and be creative in the world of imagination.
It's early on for us in the business but in simple terms I like food and beer plus visiting Italy was fantastic. Now somehow we've been able to combine these areas as a "job". We're working with the department of international trade to look into opportunities for assisting the breweries we are working with and ourselves of realising the vision which has always been connecting local breweries to global doors including Italia. Now there are lot of doors left in the United Kingdom to get to too but making an idea a reality is possible and it can be enjoyable too amongst the roller coaster of running a business, so having a few minutes to take in these moments is so worthwhile.
I'm not near a scanner at the moment but pictures will follow.
]]>I've decided to write this now, not just so we can talk about it but so we can help raise awareness and you can find out more about the charities and link to them so have awareness of events and details of their progress.
Local schools include raffles etc
We've supported a few raffles with prizes and vouchers helping raise money for equipment and repairs etc. We're delighted to discuss other initiatives we can work with so please get in touch and tell us about your cause.
Tryanuary
Back in January we provided some prizes for Tryanuary in support of the nominated charity. In 2018 the Tryanuary team raised £3,676.90 for East Anglia's Children's Hospices (having set a target of £2,000). Tryanuary quote a huge thank you to everyone who donated.
We were only just into our second month then and were really grateful for Tom Stapely's feedback and comments during the raffle draw about us trying to do the right things. As mentioned it was early days for us so we are looking forward to Tryanuary 2019 and thinking about what more we can do to support this great initiative which supports a different charity every year. Look at Tryanuary's website for more details and we'll update in due course.
East Cheshire Hospice
The East Cheshire Hospice is a hospice which is close to us in many ways as we have had family members spend their final days there and appreciated first hand the support they provide for the individual as well as their family and friends.
Previously we've personally done some charity swims/runs for this cause but through Order.Beer we've provided some prizes for events and looking at other areas to support the hospice. It is incredible to hear the work of some of the individuals involved and if we can help even in a small way then we are delighted to assist.
Specifically Christine Masson successfully ran a quiz supper in February which raised an amazing £3400 for the charity, including a matched donation from Barclays.
You can learn more about the East Cheshire Hospice here and they also have a lottery which may be of interest.
Breast Cancer Care
We recently provided some prizes in support of Breast Cancer Care and through an individual tea party, an amazing £1086 was raised for Breast Cancer Care. We are awaiting some more details of this event and hope to add more in due course.
You can learn more about Breast Cancer Care here.
Prevent Breast Cancer
The only UK breast cancer charity funding ground-breaking research solely aimed at preventing the disease for future generations.
We are delighted to be able to support Prevent Breast Cancer as it is not only supporting a cause which has affected friends and family members in many circles but also because we have met the people behind it and understand the great work they are doing.
Raising profile and awareness is crucial and if we can help in anyway to do this then that is fantastic. We have been helping with prizes and promotions and have some more ideas for the future of what we see as a long term partnership. Keep an eye out on their events list.
Summary of the charity as follows:
"Predict. Prevent. Protect.
You could call it our mantra. As the only UK charity entirely dedicated to the prediction and prevention of breast cancer, we’re committed to freeing the world from the disease altogether. Unlike many cancer charities, we’re focused on preventing, rather than curing. Promoting early diagnosis, screening and lifestyle changes, we believe we can stop the problem before it starts. And being situated at the only breast cancer prevention centre in the UK, we’re right at the front-line in the fight against the disease.
Our Purpose
Our purpose is simple: to create a future free from breast cancer, where there is no before or after diagnosis. And thanks to better predictive tools and early intervention, we truly believe that for future generations, breast cancer will be a thing of the past. This means acting now, to help more people live a life that’s free from the disease. It means funding research aimed solely at preventing breast cancer. And it means creating a world where thousands of people are spared from ever experiencing the pain and suffering it causes. Put simply, our purpose is in our name."
For more information have a look at the Prevent Breast Cancer Website.
]]>It's well worth trying different beers and if you are unsure ask a local brewery for a sample and explain what you usually drink. There is a beer for nearly everyone.
I don't drink it any more but roll back twenty years or so there was a time when we drank Fosters and with some friends created a pyramid of cans that covered the width of my bedroom window to the top. I thought it was an achievement anyway even though we did get some questions! (Ideas here for your greatest beer bottle/can creations, answers on a postcard!)
If you are looking for a lager that's ideal for the summer then look no further than Freedom Brewery which has it's own British Selection and has been a popular choice amongst our customers. It's also Vegan Friendly and tastes great. Have a look at the Freedom Brewery Selection. |
The majority of the beers listed on our site we've either tried ourselves and/or from breweries which we have met and delighted to be able to supply their beers to a wider audience across the UK. Our vision is Connecting local breweries to global doors, Aberdeen to Southampton is a good start!
We are of course conscious of customer demand and you may have noticed we have recently added a Gluten Free Selection which has been requested in discussions and I'm delighted the first few beers have come from Brass Castle Brewery who we've shared a few pints with both sampling and rambling! Order yours now. |
Alcohol free is also another area of interest and we're looking into options here, as it's getting that balance. It's a lot of the bigger brands dominating this market and again whilst there would probably be interest it would tough to be competitive with other suppliers. However we have identified a couple of independent breweries and hope to have some options available soon.
Varying slightly we've also been asked about Cider and some other products that end with the last three letters of begin. We'll certainly listen to our customers but rest assured our same principles will apply and working with producers who we can relate to is key and if we can all enjoy it then absolutely fantastic.
Finally I'm writing this blog on the day we sadly lost one of our childhood heroes and somebody I met at Butlins with my Grandad. I am of course talking about the Chuckle brothers, so thanks for keeping us balanced Barry and from me to you, a huge thank you for entertaining us all.
]]>Beer has a rich history of bringing communities together and uniting like-minded souls who may have never encountered one another without it. Beer can be given as a gift to break the ice with people we don’t yet know too well and can act as an excellent talking point with work colleagues, family members, future friends and more. Public houses have always acted as places for friends to encounter each other for the first time, with many long-lost friends reuniting over a beer or several after many years. Bars have always formed a backdrop for workmates to relax after long hard days, with some of the most important and engaging conversations people will ever have taking place during lengthy drinking sessions.
Celebrate diversity with beer
A recent campaign by Heineken was based on people with differing opinions coming together to share their opinions and celebrate diversity. The campaign was called ‘Open Your World’ and was created with The Human Library. The Huffington Post was also involved in the campaign, creating an online content channel named ‘Conversations’. Similar campaigns have also been unveiled by Foster’s and Carlsberg recently. Heineken’s campaign was focused on helping people celebrate their differences at a time of deep political division.
Break the ice in style
Millions upon millions of people have beer in common, even when they share little else. Beer offers a valuable release from the stresses of daily life, and many studies have shown the value of enjoying it in moderation. Researchers in Switzerland found that beer can make you happier, friendlier and less inhibited, with Basel University Hospital head of psychopharmacology research Matthias Liechti saying just one glass of beer enables us to “see happy faces faster” and enhance “concern for positive emotional situations”. Researchers looked at the behaviour of 60 people, half of whom drank sufficient alcohol to lift the level of alcohol in their blood to approximately 0.4g per litre, with the others consuming a non-alcoholic beverage before switching roles. The study, carried out in 2016, found that people were more enthusiastic about socialising after they had drunk the alcohol.

]]>There has been a substantial rise in the level of interest in British beer over recent years, with craft beer performing particularly well. A number of ‘Meet the Buyer’ events have been held recently, with international buyers from a host of countries meeting representatives from UK brewers. Some of the most enthusiastic interest has come from countries like the Czech Republic, Germany and Belgium, though demand for British beer has also come from non-EU markets including India, Australia and China to give just a few examples. Read on to find out more about why British beer seems to be taking on the world.
A “16-fold increase”
More and more independent craft brewers are seeing their products exported to international markets. A spokesman for Greene King said they had been met with a “16-fold increase” in Chinese orders over the course of just a few weeks back in 2015 after Chinese leader Xi Jinping was seen supping a pint of the brewer’s beer during a state visit to the UK. A pub landlord based in Urumqi, Xinjiang said he was selling up to 300 litres of the British beer a day according to the BBC. Reports say that some Chinese drinkers have become so accustomed to British beer than they are paying up to 40 times more for it than local lagers.
Record beer exports
Britain had 1,300 breweries by Autumn 2015, with the numbers said to be rising by around 10% annually. Exports of British beer have been rising to record levels, with brewery Brewdog now exporting to well over 50 different couutries and the company’s founders fronting their own US TV show which sees them heading out on various beery trips.
The best “sessionable” beers?
Many experts have put the UK’s success on the global beer market down to the country’s “sessionable” beers. For those that don’t know, “sessionable” beers are those that have an alcohol volume or 5% or less, have a balance between hop and malt characters and a clean finish. Session or sessionable beers are designed to enable drinkers to consume several beers without reaching an undesirable level of intoxication, making them ideal for those that like to drink beer for lengthy periods without becoming drunk.
An ongoing drive
The Government have announced a strategy to drive exports of UK beer by £100m over a five-year period. A new British pub set-up is being launched to appear at international trade shows and emphasise the importance of tourists visiting UK pubs. The concept, which is being branded a “showcase” pub is set to feature a red telephone box, seating areas and a bar. Beer is now the UK’s third-biggest export in terms of food and drink after Scotch whisky and chocolate, with over 1 billion pints being enjoyed overseas each year. The set-up could feature at trade shows and other corporate events in the US, France, Canada, China and Italy. It seems the love affair with British beer – especially craft beer - is showing no signs of coming to an end.
